“Finland holds a conspicuous place… our readers will no doubt rest satisfied with the undisputed fact, that from a very early period of history, Finland formed an integral portion of the Swedish realm, and that the civilization of Finland is exclusively Swedish in its origin and in its development. … indeed, had it not been for the Swedish occupation, the Finns would most likely have suffered … the same melancholy spectacle of a few scattered and dwindling tribes, unknown and often hostile to each other..:”
